The Cheese Cutting Ceremony
Galati & Sons, the iconic grocery store on Wray Avenue, was rocking this morning. At 10am this morning the enormous Auricchio Provolone was released from its chains and Galati got down to business cutting that monster up.
We got there about 11am and no joke we could smell the cheese from about 100 metres down the road before we reached the supermarket. The whole store was buzzing with people tasting cheese, buying cheese, talking about cheese. It was impressive after just one hour there was about one third of it left and two burly men were still slicing massive chunks off the remaining piece.
If you’re in the area stop by and grab a piece: ideal for an aperitif, grated on pasta or shaved on fresh carpaccio so I’m told.

Cutting the Cheese
It’s happening, 10am Saturday, January 21st.
Galati & Sons of Wray Avenue are cutting the giant auricchio provolone cheese that has been patiently resting in their store for the last few months.

The Big Cheese Returns
I’m not entirely sure why* but every year Galati A & Sons haul in an enormous block/log/sausage of cheese into their deli on Wray Avenue. I look forward to the cheese cutting ceremony.
*I am ready to be schooled on this matter.

Who’s Your Mumma
Mumma’s is cool. It’s somewhere to go and meet people when cafés are closed and before restaurants are open. There once was a void and now it is partially full (cause Freo could do with a few more places like this). Went here for some after-work drinks on Monday and it’s a great day-time place. I was also there last night (Friday) so thumbs up for boozing on the weekend too.

Small Bar Hopes for South Terrace
Rumour has it the bottom floor of this building on the corner of South Terrace and Wray Avenue is going to be a small bar. It’s undergoing a fit-out at the moment so our hopes remain high.
In the meantime check out the Small Bar Association’s website for a list of small bars in WA.

Wild Poppy, Granny Chic
Went to Wild Poppy on Wray Avenue for breakfast this morning.
As you can see there’s lots going on with the decor: textures, salvage, colour, Ikea, vintage and a bit of granny-chic (lace, patchwork and crochet) thrown in for good measure.
Me and The Brunette had the Veggie Breakfast and the Chorizo Omlette respectively. The former was cooked perfectly the latter came with mushrooms, spinach, scrambled egg, tomato and French bread toast. Both were tasty and did the job (breakfast stops at 11.30am).
I spotted a router on the counter-top and asked one of the staff if they had WiFi. She said they did but her boss had the password and he/she had stepped out for a while, she also said that it tends to be a bit patchy.

The Good Old Humble Pub
Some nights I just like to stay home, some nights I want to party, some nights I need a cocktail and some nights I feel like going to ‘the good old humble pub’. The good old humble pub – that’s the one with the fireplace, where I can go anytime, where I don’t have to dress up, where I can have a quiet chat with my man or other nights meet some interesting characters at the bar and laugh all night. My ‘local’ means no stress, but good times – winding down after a working week. My local is Moondyne Joe’s. Not the sportsbar, but the front bar (they call it the Governor’s Bar). From my house it’s less than 10 minutes walking distance – an important criteria for the ‘local’. They also have good food, nice staff and – on the weekends – excellent live music. The (unfortunately very few) other guests and I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the performing bands and one could just wish more people came there to enjoy.

Quirky Architecture
Walking through town you come across so many quirky houses, which Love Freo wants to document. For example these two duplex houses on Wray Avenue, just opposite the little, much loved Italian supermarket.

According to a friend they were designed by an Austrian architect, which makes me think of
