Wallpaintings

There is something very charming about the paintings on shop walls, which advertise their goods, like these ones which I saw on South Street, on the wall of an IGA, and in the Freo port area, on the wall of an old warehouse, which apparently housed a flower wholesale at some point in the past. The enterprise is long gone, but the flowers on the wall stayed. It must be very satisfying for the artist to create paintings at such a great scale.

The Master Butcher Experience

with 5 comments

IMG_6557IMG_6556

There are butchers and then there are ‘German Butchers’. Tucked away in an unassuming building on the corner of South Street and Carrington is a meat-lovers dream. The signage reads in bold letters MASTER-BUTCHER and is an indication of what lays within. As you slide the manual double door open, the aroma of smoked meat immediately arouses the senses. You know Germans do things with meticulous care and skill, right? Well this little enterprise is no exception and upholds the traditions of old. The produce is of the highest quality, like Porsches, Mercedes, and Volkswagens but better because you can have this fine time-honoured German fare without the expense but feel as fortunate. The service is friendly, courteous and matter-of-fact. If you were German I’m sure it would feel like home. A number of condiments and sweets can be found to enhance the experience. Do yourself a ‘flavour’ and go to Hela Smallgoods – you won’t be disappointed.

You Know You Want It

There was great joy when I suggested to the Melbourne Man to try out Fremantle’s new Chocolateria San Churro. Well, it’s not actually brand new – opened its doors last December – but we hadn’t been there before. But, oh man, we will be back! This place is a Mecca for chocolate lovers. There’s an extensive menu full of chocolaty sins like chocolate fondue, hot chocolates, chocolate cakes, … We went for the chocolate ice cream (choice of white, milk or dark) which comes with warm chocolate sauce by the side (also here you can choose between white, milk or dark) and it was rich, chocolaty and simply divine. ‘Better to have enjoyed and made a mess than to never have enjoyed at all’ – oh yeah! You’ll find Chocolateria San Churro behind Cino’s, 91 Market Street, Fremantle, Phone 9336 7557, fremantle@sanchurro.com.au

Return to Western Farmers Market

Another visit to the growers markets. They’ve been getting pretty busy lately, which is great, as buying locally is a good thing and the products are all very tasty. If you’re not a fan of crowds I recommend going early (definitely earlier than us today – 10am – the place was packed). It also seems as there are more stands every time we go and today there were some guys playing the violin and a boy playing the guitar. Especially on a sunny day it’s a really nice atmosphere and it’s enjoyable spending some time there checking out the various products on offer.

Fern Community Garden on the corner of High Street & Montreal Street, Fremantle. Every Sunday morning, 7.30am to 12.30pm.

Jim Kidd Sports Store in Aid of the Salvo’s

leave a comment »

I was browsing round town this morning, trying to find a suitable new footy, when I stumbled into the Aladdin’s Cave-like bohemith store that is the new Jim Kidd outlet on the corner of Essex Street and Norfolk Lane. I can’t remember now what used to be in this building, and I know it was empty for a while, but is now host to more sports clothes, shoes and acoutrement than you can poke a hockey stick at.

But what is really cool is that this whole store appears to be dedicated to raising money for charity. I asked the kindly chap at the till about the signs all round the store: apparently Jim Kidd is giving all the proceeds to the Salvos: every dollar you spend in there goes to them. Now maybe this was just a one day thing (or maybe not? I forgot to ask) but that’s pretty generous. I reckon if you need some new sporting apparel, buy it from here.

Sunshine makes the visit pleasant

Sunshine makes the visit pleasant

One of our weekend activities is a visit to Western Farmers Market on Sunday morning, where we stock up on fresh fruit and veggies, honey and organic crusty sourdough rye bread (yummmm…). If the lady with ‘Witherspoon’s Skincare’ products is there, give her hand treatment a go. Made from mineral crystals, fruit and nut oils and plant extracts, this stuff has done miracles to my hands. If we hadn’t had breakfast, we’d have gone straight for the fresh coffee and croissants stall – it’s been the busiest on the whole market so I guess it must be good.

Here some facts I’ve copied from the market’s website:

Western Farmers Market is a genuine growers market, bringing fresh food direct from the farm gate to the community. We guarantee the person who grew, bred, caught, pickled, smoked or baked the product is the person you meet at their stall.

Where? Fern Community Garden on the corner of High Street & Montreal Street, Fremantle.
When?
Every Sunday morning, 7.30am to 12.30pm.
What? Farm fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, honey, olive oil, pickles, preserves, organic bread, pastries, breakfast burgers, juice, coffee and much more…
Remember: Cash only and BYO shopping bags.
