Café 55 – Pukka Food
I’m kicking myself that I haven’t been to this wonderful little eatery sooner: I was put off once by their specials board declaring some dish with peanuts, and peanuts have me running for the hills (a severe nut allergy rather than a legume phobia), and I didn’t make it back to give them a second chance, more fool me.
I love curries, I love south-east Asian curries in particular and now I have finally been to this place I have a whole menu to explore. I was too busy chatting with Michelle – the Love Freo blog-reader who insisted I try this place out – to do anything useful, like write down what my dish was called, or make a note of their opening hours. But I did get this superbly average picture with the Love Freo phone-cam which doesn’t really come close to doing the food justice.
My lamb curry was delicious, rich in flavour, with good quality non-fatty lamb, and cost about 10 bucks, which for Freo is an absolute bargain. The blonde likes a good laksa too, so I’d say we’ll be fairly regular at this gaff.

Delicious food at Cafe 55. The fly on the papadum (not the Cafe's fault) was just an added bonus.
Thanks to Michelle for suggesting this place. People please feel free to suggest any other glaring omissions from the Love Freo food hall. Next week: Hungry Jack’s!

Sunday at Creatures Loft
It’s been a while since we last visited the Loft (not to be mistaken for the ‘old’ Loft fondly remembered by the ‘older’ Perth people), as we still haven’t really forgiven the owners for ditching the cocktails. No idea why that’s been done. It was quite an experience watching the Canadian bar virtuoso creating the most tasty and unique cocktails which could compete with great bars around the world. Alright – cocktails are gone, but the space is still one of the best in the West. Love sitting in the sun on the big balconies, love the view over the fishing boat harbour, love the space, the winged chairs, the long table, the friendly staff… On Sunday there was a band playing. In the beginning we found it a bit loud and we moved outside as we wanted to talk, but the later the day it seemed to be blending in nicely. The Pale Ale went down well, so did the wine and the lentil dish our friend ordered was very tasty. We’ll be back.

Great night at Clancy’s
Natalie Gillespie was brilliant at Clancy’s last night. For a concert that high quality the venue was surprisingly quiet and people seemed to feel a bit insecure about hitting the dancefloor at first. But after the break the music was just too upbeat keep seated – there’s nothing better after a working week than dancing the night away to some great music.

Mrs Brown a New Bar in North Fremantle
A new bar has opened in North Fremantle. There’s no obvious signage on the facade but there’s some small text on the window calling it Mrs Brown Bar or is it Mrs Brown’s Bar, I must check again to see what it’s called.
Flipside, the burger bar next door, is the licence holder. It looks great. I love the light fitting above the bar made of pipes. It was busy earlier on in the night before I took the photo.

Mrs. Browns
The licence application states:
“The bar will be pitched, in terms of ambiance, product and price point, at patrons in the 28-60 year old age group. The target market will enjoy a glass of wine, good food and conversation in a comfortable, seated environment.”
Because once your over 25 you like to spend your money quaffing wine in a comfy chair. I’m going on Friday I quite fancy myself perched upon one of those stools.
Opening Hours:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4.30pm – midnight;
Friday and Saturday 1.00pm – midnight;
Sunday – 1.00pm to 10 pm.

Dancing at Mojo’s into The Early Hours
The chatter in the Lady’s toilet at Mojo’s was nothing short of frenzied excitement as the prospect of seeing The Early Hours back on the stage had the girls digging a bit further for that lash extending mascara.
The bar had been a steady buzz of activity all night, although most of that buzz came from out the back, as the first few acts played to a thinly spread crowd who were wandering in and out with drinks. Unfortunate because the first acts didn’t get the applause they deserved for some great music and for fulfilling the often ignominious task of, in this case, being the warm up.

The Crowd

The Drinks
As H-hour approached things changed at pace: the smoking crowd slowly drifted into the main room filling it in no time. The girly groupies came in last, looking resplendent in their make-up and high heels, if slightly novel for the dingy music-bar surrounds of this timeless venue. Then the band snaked through and up onto the stage, met with a cheers from most, screams from some, they picked up their instruments and blasted straight in with Willing and Able, a crowd pleasing up-front rock-n-rolly rock number that brought the drinkers in closer and set the night off to a great start.
This was the Early Hours’ first gig in a long old while, and this comeback was obviously being looked forward to by more than just the usual crowd at Mojo’s. In fact, it was perhaps the most eclectic audience that I’ve seen in this compact music joint: a merry gang of lawyers to support their colleague Chet, an equally merry gang of those girly-groupies (largely here for Chet as well I gather), a few improbably large blokes who had made the drive down from Perenjori (where Kirk has been living for a few years), the usual Mojo’s suspects and of course, us.
The blonde was sporting her new hair-do and I was drinking my way through a seven hour jet-lag. The band’s set was well received, and it flew by, leaving us wanting more. The Early Hours obliged with another extended version of Willing and Able, before finally braving the crowd and leaving the stage for some well earned drinks.
The Early Hours are playing their next gig at the Fly By Night club in Fremantle next Saturday 9th May, as part of the Perth Pop Festival. Go and see them!!
