Another great exhibition opening happening this weekend… Dave Wolfy AKA Dave Misled opens Refined on Sunday the 4th of September at Lick Art Space. It should be an interesting show as you’ll see Dave’s work move towards abstract expressionism and painting on all types of mediums.

The Abandoned Trolley Project

with 2 comments

Remember Ritchie Ned Hansel? Problably not, he was and artist that came to Freo last May, holy shit that was a year ago times flies. Anyway Richie and Dave Misled led a Street Art Character Design Workshop in the Moore’s Building which was great but that’s an aside. Ritchie spent two months here as part of IASKA’s cultural exchange program in partnership with the Jakarta Biennale and began work on The Abandoned Trolley Project

“The Abandoned Trolley Project” is a site specific project that intervernes in public space by using the trolley as an object where the artwork will be placed with the purpose of making the object more interesting or to add beauty to the object.

You can see his work documented on The Abandoned Trolley Project website and on FaceBook.

Feast Your Eyes is Back

with one comment

Remember Feast your Eyes? Well it’s back, hurray.

The Sun Orchestra will play at the event in the Fremantle Arts Centre and Bec Litton will be painting live on stage.

Did you know silent auctions are so hot right now? The Cat’s Pyjamas had one and Feast your Eyes will have one too.

Live on Stage

Thirteen of the FYE artists have painted on canvas fabric which has been passed onto embroiderers to create collaborative pieces. All proceeds from the sales of these pieces go directly to the Australian Conservation Foundation towards a Western Australian campaign. Have a sneaky view of what’s under the hammer.

Street Art Character Design at Moore’s Studio

with 3 comments

On Saturday I went to the Character Design Workshop at the Moore’s Studio and learnt a thing or two about character design.

Dave Misled and Richie Ned Hansel* led the workshop and Reboot dropped by and gave a bit of a talk on stenciling. It was really well structured: Dave and Richie went through the finer points of how to develop a design from concept right through to advanced detailing. And Reboot talked about how to layer your stencil design and transfer them accurately to walls/canvas. Everyone got a chance to get hands on and give spray painting a go then the room got a bit hazy from the paint fumes so things were transferred outside for some sketching.

A good time was had by all.

Things I learned:

  1. Don’t buy cheap paint (unless you want drips).
  2. Do pre-cut your masking tape before you go on a nocturnal stenciling spree.
  3. Don’t paint over someone elses work (unless you want a kicking).
  4. Do spend time on your character design: love it, cherish it, nurture it.

The Workshop

*I’ll be writing more about Richie soon, he’s leading this really great project involving abandoned shopping trolleys.

Feat Your Eyes @ Tum Tum Tree Lane

Great atmosphere at the first ‘Feast Your Eyes’ interactive art exhibition. We love the concept and hope there’ll be more events like this. The art was diverse and interesting, I guess my favourite were Denise Eime’s The Broome Kids come to Freo – adorable. Thanks guys, great event!
