San Cisco at The Arts Centre

On Friday we went to see San Cisco play in the courtyard of the Arts Centre. There were three bands: San Cisco, Sugarpuss and a jazz quartet, I can’t remember the name of the latter but the saxophone player was lead singer’s from San Cisco’s Dad.

GREAT music, atmosphere, venue, lighting. Ticked all the boxes. If you have a chance to go see some music in the courtyard, do, cause it’s awesome.

Cap'n Carps (Guitar & Vocals), Duncan Da Pumpkin (Bass), Sticky Sticks Cantrell (Drums) and Sweetlips Fitzpatrick (Harmonica)

What an awesome long weekend this is, lots of cool stuff on and I’m sure there’s heaps more to write about, but this is about the Cross Eyed Cats only – because they’re playing bloody good blues. We checked them out the North Freo Bowling Club this Friday and had a splendid time. Here’s a bit more about the band:

The Cross Eyed Cats started out life in 2002. There was five of them. The departure of one member* to (inconsiderately) pursue work in Victoria meant the band had to quickly regroup as a quartet. Still, what band actually needs two guitarists. Early live performances included residencies at the Davilak Hotel in Fremantle and Clancy’s Fish Pub in Subiaco along with the occasional gig at the Fly By Night Club. Amongst other purveyors of fine blues music (and beer). However, after a happy 18 months at the Davilak and 4 at Clancy’s the band suffered an enforced layoff due to work commitments, illness and jetsetting. It’s a hard life. But they’re getting the band back together and will play for folks for a modest monetary return.

Bad things happen. That’s why the Cross Eyed Cats play bloody good blues.

We’ll keep an eye out for future gigs – they’re well worth visiting.

Weekend forever

The weekend has been just awesome and the best way to get through the rest of the week is to looking forward to the next one. Always a great choice is a night out at Clancy’s – next Saturday you can spend it with the legendary Chevelles, who have just recently been touring the States.

The Polyphonic Spree at The FAC

with 5 comments

We got free tickets (I think a lot of people did) to go see Polyphonic  Spree at The FAC. As you know free stuff is the best kind of stuff so we hot footed over there after the Ocean Calling exhibition.

Had the usual bag search at the door but the security staff insisted I check my camera in with them. They declared it a professional one and that I could take photos with an intent to sell, gasp. I have an Olympus E-420: any professional photographer would balk at the thought of using it “professionally”. I didn’t care because I had 2 other sneaky mini-cameras in my bag, not because I’m dedicated to the cause but because I haven’t sorted thought my bag in about a month. Meanwhile, metres away a few people smoked a big spliff as security saw to my camera.

Anyway the show was entertaining but for me only really picked up near the end when they got changed in to their white robes for the encore and sang Lithium by Nirvana and Something In The Air by Thunderclap Newman. The crowd loved it and they had these cannon things that shot glittery paper in the air: looked really cool.

You might notice that everyone was wearing feathered headdresses, I don’t know what was going on with them I arrived late.

Here’s a small video clip at 0:19 the cannons do their thing.

Jane Germain & The Yahoos

Jane Germain & The Yahoos

For a truly local, unpretentious and fun night of live music head down to the Hilton Park Bowling Club. They’ve got a band playing on Sundays from 4.30pm. The atmosphere is laid back, the beer is cheap and you can dance as if no-one was watching.

From Mid-November you can come along to their corporate bowls on Wednesday nights.
