We got a bit of a surprise when we went down to Bathers Beach last night to watch the fireworks… People, so many people. We walked past the Esplanade along the Mews road down by the harbour and on to the beach at the boardwalk ramp. Everywhere was busy despite the heat (35° at 8pm) and there was a great atmosphere as folks set up camp with blankets and Eskys. Last year I remember wishing I brought a blanket it was that cold.

The firework barge looked a lot closer than 300 metres away and the clouds from the approaching storm made for a really nice sunset before the real show began. City of Fremantle and Cockburn nice work looking forward to next year.

Galati & Sons, the iconic grocery store on Wray Avenue, was rocking this morning. At 10am this morning the enormous Auricchio Provolone was released from its chains and Galati got down to business cutting that monster up.

We got there about 11am and no joke we could smell the cheese from about 100 metres down the road before we reached the supermarket. The whole store was buzzing with people tasting cheese, buying cheese, talking about cheese. It was impressive after just one hour there was about one third of it left and two burly men were still slicing massive chunks off the remaining piece.

If you’re in the area stop by and grab a piece: ideal for an aperitif, grated on pasta or shaved on fresh carpaccio so I’m told.

After 20 years of supporting Western Australian artists, many of them from Fremantle and now well established, the Mark Howlett Foundation is calling it quits – but not without throwing a final party, which is happening tonight at the Arts Centre. There will be a live performance by Lucky Oceans / Dave Brewer Band with special guest Dom Mariani, playing together for the first time. They’ll also launch the limited edition 100-page, fully illustrated hardcover MHF book, which looks back at the past 20 years of the Foundation.

The Black Truffle is a welcome addition to North Fremantle. Previously Vanya’s, formally Latitude 9, was the only spot to grab some lunch and a coffee. Variety is the spice of life and multiple lunch options are always good.

It’s a delicatessen so it’s more of a grab-and-go kind of place rather than a sit-down-and-eat but they have a decent selection of sandwiches (made to order) and salads. The name might suggest, truffle screams expensive to me, that this is going to be a pricey place but it’s not too bad. A large salad is $10.50 and a filled roll is $7. I can’t comment their coffee as yet but these guys pride themselves on a Italian style family feel so their coffee should to be good.

While you’re waiting for your food you can check out the other half of the store: a providore with stuff like hummus, pasta, ragu, preserves etc. to bring home.

Open 7am -7pm Monday to Sunday

Unit 1/ 82 Stirling Highway,
North Fremantle,
WA 6159.
