I agree! This shop is full of so many great pieces. The girls have a great eye for purchasing and selecting stock. Great addition to Fremantle!

Hi Orla

There will be quite a few more than 774 cruise ship passengers in Fremantle on Wednesday 8 February.

There will be approximately 2500 passengers in Fremantle with only 504 of those passengers on pre booked tours. There are actually 1602 passengers aboard the Queen Mary 2, with 774 disembarking at around 9.00 am and 902 embarking at around 12 noon. The Fremantle Tourist Guides will be providing passengers with visitor information at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal and Fremantle Visitor Centre in Kings Square. The City of Fremantle is supporting the Queen Mary 2 shuttle buses by engaging Fremantle Trams to provide additional shuttle service from the passenger terminal into Kings Square.

Hi Roel, my husband and I stood and viewed Fremantle Society's model outside Woolworths yesterday. And looking at the model brought up more questions about contemporary planning process than anything else. Why do we start with height when talking about planning? I know this is the way it has been done, however since this convention emerged some truly horrible building practices have been developed. What if planning for future urban development in Freo began instead with notions and values, and not just the notions and values of a select vested interest few? What if we could say we value elements such as roof top development on new buildings including gardens and alternative energy and make this kind of element a rewarded inclusion in future urban development? Imagine an elevated park system with walk ways between buildings, somewhere to grow food and socialise? Imagine if we could prohibit use of prefab and or tilt concrete and instead reward use of traditional building materials? What if there was a required shaped rhythm between buildings? What if most ground floor space was required to interact with the street? Im thinking and wondering what elements would be on a notions and values wish list for people who are already invested as rate payers in Fremantle? We want a local government to create sense of place and speaking from my own list of values, its my view that featureless prefab concrete does not contribute to Fremantle's sense of place and this form of architecture offends me way more than height. I value openness and creative vertical lane ways, trees, shade, breeze ways, quality artisan work in building finish, timber and stone construction, verandahs big enough to grow food, all of these elements are more important to me than height. I'm thinking if the City could come out and say what kind of design elements and sense of place values it will support and reward within the proposed height then height will become much more negotiable.

The Fremantle Society, of which I am the president, is all for progress and development to revitalise the tired inner city of Fremantle, but we don't believe high rise is the answer to the retail problems in the city.

The Fremantle Society works towards a modern Fremantle while embracing the heritage past.

On my Freo's View blog I have posted photos of great modern design and shown similar examples of i.e Hundertwasser buildings in Vienna, etc. I love modern architecture as much as I love our gorgeous old West End heritage buildings.

Before people make claims about what the Society stands for, they should inform themselves and come and have a chat with us, or pick up one of our brochures, or read the Fighting For Fremantle book.

Contact me at roel@profilephoto.com.au or call me on 0419 850981
