The Cheese Cutting Ceremony

leave a comment »

Galati & Sons, the iconic grocery store on Wray Avenue, was rocking this morning. At 10am this morning the enormous Auricchio Provolone was released from its chains and Galati got down to business cutting that monster up.

We got there about 11am and no joke we could smell the cheese from about 100 metres down the road before we reached the supermarket. The whole store was buzzing with people tasting cheese, buying cheese, talking about cheese. It was impressive after just one hour there was about one third of it left and two burly men were still slicing massive chunks off the remaining piece.

If you’re in the area stop by and grab a piece: ideal for an aperitif, grated on pasta or shaved on fresh carpaccio so I’m told.

Growers' Green Farmer's Market, South Fremantle Senior High School, Lefroy Road, Beaconsfield, Sunday

The Growers’ Green Farmer’s Market at South Freo High on Lefroy Road has a new website. That’s handy, if you’d like to find out more about the stall-holders or when the market re-opens after Christmas or any other hot market news. The last chance to get your fresh produce from the market for the holidays is their ‘drive-thru market’ this Saturday, 24 December, 8–10:30 am.

Origins on High Street: Coffee, Art & A Touch of Science

with one comment

I paid a flying visit into Origins this morning to check out Freo’s latest place to enjoy a great coffee. The guys from The Attic have done a brilliant job of fitting out the space to make it part specialist pop-up coffee shop, part gallery, and all round cool space.

Given that the back part doesn’t really see any daylight, it feels really light and airy.

Coffee made old-school style like a science experiment has got to be a good thing. Attention to detail, style, modern creative use of a period space. The West End gets a bit better very week.

Ootong & Lincoln… calling all cake ladies

with 2 comments

Love Freo is looking forward to the opening of another mighty coffee and cake establishment on South Terrace (which will make the total number on that road about 7000). The cafe will be in the site of the old Devonshire Tea House and Colonial Antiques, and will be known quite poetically as Ootong and Lincoln. In a bid to help them out a bit they are looking for some people to work there (in exchange for money no less) and are particularly looking for a cake lady and kitchen staff. So drop Leanne an email if you are interested; this might be the perfect time for a career change.

- Since posting this article we’ve had a few enquiries to Love Freo for jobs at Ootong and Lincoln. In case it wasn’t obvious from the picture below, please contact Leanne directly via email:  leanned7@hotmail.com with your job enquiries. Thanks

Here’s breakfast

Going to school on a Sunday? Of course, but only to South Fremantle Senior High School – for the Sunday Farmers’ Market. What to bring? Empty bags and plenty of cash. What to take? Everything you need for the week. Who will you meet? Your neighbours, old friends, new friends, happy children and nice dogs. Why is it so good? Starting your Sunday with shopping fresh produce in a relaxed atmosphere under old trees, while a lovely girl is playing the saxophone – perfect. And if you are hungry you can have your breakfast right there, just chose from one of the many food stalls. I tried the crepes and they were lovely.

If you haven’t been there already (and I bet you have), check it out next Sunday:

Since the closure of Western Farmers’ Market on Montreal Street I really missed my Sunday morning market visits for shopping with fresh coffee and community feel. Finally it’s happening again – now at South Fremantle Senior High School. Expect local and organic produce, fresh milk, free range meat and eggs, fish, honey, baked goods, hot breakfast, flowers, plants, olive oil, and more. Opening on Sunday 20 June 2010. More info on the market’s website.

Got myself some of their fine Belgian chocolates yesterday and as expected they were very nice. I can recommend the French Truffle and the Black Russian. There was also some pretty impressive looking cakes in there, I shall return.
